I just finished reading the first volume of the manga Death Note (took me long enough, I know - I had other books to spend money on and only thought of downloading it from bittorrent a few days ago).  I really enjoyed it - interesting idea, suspenseful pacing and some interesting twists.

The concept is the real star of the series - if you had the power to kill anyone you wanted, without anyone knowing it was you, what would you do?  The main character, Raito, takes it to a bit of an extreme; he uses the book to kill thousands of criminals in an attempt to try to cleanse the world of evil and then take over as god.  (Not quite what I would have done with it, but each to his own, I suppose.)

Though the first volume is great, the series could go either way, depending on whether the author has interesting new concepts and ideas to throw into the story.  Since there are 12 volumes, I hope he (she?) does.  Guess I'll find out when the next volume downloads.

Well, that's a pain in the ass.  Seven days of enforced non-participation on a site I just joined will just mean that I'll have forgotten about it by the time I can actually do anything.

Slytherin Rising, a series by the unfairly talented ms_katonic, is one of my favorite HP fanfics.  It was actually the first ff I ever got hooked on, and I've been following it ever since.  It's an epic AU fic running approximately parallel with Harry's years at Hogwarts, centering around some awesome OCs.  Unfortunately, the author stopped writing it for a long time - so imagine my happiness when I thought to check the fic page and found a whole bunch of new chapters waiting for me!

She's currently in the process of wrapping up the fourth book in the series - Year of the Cat, which takes place during Harry's third year.  If you like fanfiction and haven't read it yet, this is the perfect time to get started with Book 1.

...And speaking of themes, the custom css style I downloaded for this journal had an odd bug that covered 200 pixels at the bottom of the page with a link to the top of the page, making it impossible to click on links or select text in that zone.  Took me about 15 minutes to find and fix the bug, but I'm rather proud of myself for having found it at all.  I've never really played around with CSS coding before.

Aside from that, I also changed the colors on this theme - white on black gives me a headache.  That was more changing image files than actual coding, but still - I'm learning CSS!  Well, enough to butcher an existing theme to meet my tastes.  (And that's really all that matters, right?)

Finally got around to getting a MySpace account, despite the site's terrible design and general annoyingness.  Took hours to find a theme that wasn't seizure-inducing - I say "find", but I mean "find one that is marginally acceptable and change all the graphics to non-horrible ones".  Though I really need to find a better background than the cat (the only desktop on my hard drive with a more or less solid background color); while I'm fond of the animals, this makes me seem a tad obsessed with them.
